Northwest Calgary has everything from 1950s bungalows near the university to brand-new homes in Sage Hill and Evanston, and the dryers inside them are just as mixed. We fix the gas dryers that came with older Varsity and Brentwood homes, the stacked units squeezed into Kensington condos, and the large-capacity front-loaders in newer NW builds.

Local knowledge

What we see in Northwest Calgary laundry rooms

Older homes, gas dryers

Many established NW homes still run gas dryers on their original gas line. When those stop heating it is usually the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils — parts we carry on the van.

Condo stacked units

Kensington, Sunnyside and the university-area condos often have stacked or compact dryers in a closet. We work in tight laundry closets and bring the right parts for 24-inch units.

Long vent runs in new builds

Newer homes in Sage Hill and Nolan Hill often put the laundry upstairs, with a long vent run to the outside. A slow-drying dryer there is often an airflow problem, not a broken part, and we check that first.

Local guide

Dryer tips for Calgary NW homes

Inner NW and university-area homes

Hillhurst, Sunnyside and Mount Pleasant have some of the oldest houses in Northwest Calgary, and the laundry is usually in a basement that was finished long after the house was built. In Varsity, Brentwood, Dalhousie and Charleswood, most homes are 1960s and 1970s bungalows and split-levels, again with basement laundry and a short vent out through the rim joist. Short runs are good for airflow, but old foil or vinyl duct behind the dryer is common in these NW homes, and it gets crushed every time the machine is pushed back against the wall. If your dryer is slow, pull it out and look at the duct first. We check it on every visit.

Upstairs laundry in Sage Hill, Evanston and Nolan Hill

The newer northwest communities along Symons Valley and north of Stoney Trail were mostly built with the laundry on the second floor, close to the bedrooms. That is convenient, but the vent often travels through a floor or ceiling space before it reaches a side wall or roof cap, so it is longer and has more bends than a basement setup. Lint settles in those runs, and the dryer slowly takes longer and runs hotter until a thermal fuse gives out. In Sage Hill, Evanston, Kincora and Nolan Hill we check airflow at the outside cap before we replace any parts, because the dryer itself is often fine.

Hillside homes and NW weather

Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, Royal Oak and Scenic Acres sit on the slopes above the Bow Valley, and many homes there have walk-out basements with the laundry on the lower level. The vent often exits low on the back wall, where drifting snow, a deck or a set of stairs can partly block it. During a Calgary cold snap, moist air from the dryer can freeze the outside flap half shut, and a chinook a few days later melts it again. A dryer that seems fine one week and slow the next is worth a vent check. Keep snow cleared away from the hood through the winter.

FAQ

Dryer repair in Calgary NW — FAQ

Do you come to Tuscany and Rocky Ridge?

Yes. The far west NW communities, including Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, Royal Oak and Scenic Acres, are part of our regular NW routes.

My condo dryer is in a closet — can you still repair it?

Usually, yes. Tell us the model number and closet layout when you book so the technician arrives with the right parts and tools for a compact or stacked unit.

Can you look at a gas dryer in an older Brentwood home?

Yes. We repair gas dryers of all ages. If a part is no longer made we will tell you up front and give you the honest choice between repair and replacement.

I rent a house near the University of Calgary to students. Can you work with the tenants directly?

Yes, if you give us permission and the tenant's contact details when you book. Student rentals in Varsity, Brentwood and Banff Trail often run the dryer hard, so lint build-up and worn rollers are common. We explain to you, the owner, what we found and what the repair involves before any work goes ahead.

My NW condo building shares the dryer exhaust. Who fixes what?

In many Northwest Calgary condo buildings, the shared exhaust ducts and outside vents belong to the condo corporation, while the dryer itself is yours. We can repair the dryer and tell you whether the airflow problem is in the building's ductwork, so you can raise it with your property manager or board.
