What goes wrong with Hotpoint dryers
No heat
Heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat — simple parts on a simple dryer.
Won't start
Door switch, start switch or a blown fuse. Check the breaker first.
Noisy
Drum slides, bearings and idler pulleys wear over time and cause squeaks and scraping.
A simple GE-built dryer
North American Hotpoint dryers are GE Appliances' entry-level line. Most are full-size vented electric dryers with a rotary timer, a few push buttons and very little electronics. On most models the drum is carried at the front by plastic glides on a bearing surface and at the back by a drum bearing, and a long belt with a spring-loaded idler pulley turns it. Because the design is shared with many GE models, a technician who knows GE dryers can usually diagnose a Hotpoint quickly, without special software or service-mode codes.
What usually goes wrong
The most common Hotpoint complaints are no heat, a dryer that will not start, and squeaking or scraping. No heat on electric models usually comes down to the heating element, the thermal fuse or a thermostat. A dead dryer can be a door switch, a start switch or a thermal fuse that has opened. Scraping often means the front drum glides have worn through, letting metal rub on metal. A blown thermal fuse is nearly always a sign of poor airflow, so we check the vent run every time we replace one.
Parts and what to have ready
Hotpoint parts are widely stocked because they cross over to GE models of the same era, so most repairs can be finished on the first or second visit. Before you call, find the model and serial number. On many Hotpoint dryers the label is inside the door opening or on the back panel. Tell us whether the dryer is electric or gas, whether it hums, clicks or stays silent, and whether the drum turns. That helps us bring the right glides, belt or element.

FAQ
Hotpoint dryer repair — FAQ
Do you repair Hotpoint gas and electric dryers?
Yes. We repair Hotpoint electric & gas dryers across Calgary and nearby towns.
Where is the model number on my Hotpoint dryer?
Usually on a sticker inside the door opening or on the back panel. Have it ready when you call — it helps us bring the right parts.
Is my Hotpoint dryer worth repairing?
In most cases, yes. Common failures like fuses, heating elements, belts, rollers and sensors cost far less than a new dryer. If yours is not worth fixing, the technician will tell you honestly.
Is my Hotpoint dryer related to the Hotpoint brand in Europe?
No. In North America the Hotpoint name belongs to GE Appliances and the dryers are built on GE designs. The European Hotpoint brand is a separate company with different machines and parts. If your dryer was bought in Canada or the U.S., we treat it as a GE-family dryer and order GE-compatible parts.
My Hotpoint dryer scrapes and leaves black marks on clothes. Why?
On many GE-built dryers, including Hotpoint, worn front drum glides let the drum rub against the front panel. That can cause scraping sounds and, on some models, dark marks on clothing near the door. Stop using it until the glides are replaced, because running it longer can damage the drum edge and the bearing surface.
