Signs you need this repair

  • Drum turns but the air stays cold
  • Heats for a few minutes then goes cold
  • Takes two or three cycles to dry a load
  • Error code such as HE, tE, F3, nP or "Check heater"

Safe checks before you call

  • Clean the lint screen and check that the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer runs.
  • For electric dryers, reset the double breaker fully off and back on.
  • For gas dryers, make sure the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer is open.

Unplug the dryer before you touch anything inside it. Leave panels, wiring and gas parts to a technician.

What usually causes it

Common causes we find

Blown thermal fuse

A one-time safety fuse that cuts the heat (or the whole dryer on some models) when the exhaust gets too hot. It almost always blows because of a blocked vent, so we replace the fuse and find the cause.

Failed heating element (electric)

The coil can break or short to the housing. We check it with a meter rather than by eye, because a cracked coil can look intact.

Igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils (gas)

If the igniter glows but the gas never lights, the valve coils are the usual suspect. If it never glows, the igniter or flame sensor is the likely fault.

Cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat

These switch the heat on and off to hold temperature. When one fails open, there is no heat at all.

Half the power at the outlet (electric)

An electric dryer needs both legs of its 240 V circuit to heat. If one breaker leg has tripped, the motor runs but the element stays cold. LG shows nP for this on many models.

FAQ

Dryer Not Heating — FAQ

Is a dryer that won't heat worth repairing?

Usually yes. The parts involved — thermal fuse, element, igniter, thermostat — are among the most affordable dryer repairs.

Why does my thermal fuse keep blowing?

Restricted airflow. A lint-packed vent, crushed duct or stuck outdoor flap makes the dryer overheat. Replacing the fuse without fixing the vent means it will blow again.

Can you fix gas and electric dryers?

Yes. We repair both, including propane-converted gas dryers.
