Dryer Not Spinning or Tumbling
You press start and hear a hum, a click, or nothing at all — and the drum just sits there. Most dryers that will not tumble have a broken belt or a worn drive part, and we carry belts, rollers and idler pulleys for the major brands.

Signs you need this repair
- Motor hums but the drum does not turn
- Drum turns easily by hand with the door open (snapped belt)
- Squealing, thumping or grinding before it stopped
- Dryer starts, then stops after a few seconds
Safe checks before you call
- Make sure the door closes firmly and the latch clicks.
- Remove any heavy item (a shoe, a rug) that could be jamming the drum.
- Unplug the dryer before you try turning the drum by hand.
Unplug the dryer before you touch anything inside it. Leave panels, wiring and gas parts to a technician.
What usually causes it
Common causes we find
Broken drive belt
The most common cause. Belts stretch and fray over years and then snap. If the drum spins freely by hand, the belt is almost certainly gone.
Worn idler pulley
The idler keeps tension on the belt. A worn bearing squeals first, then seizes and can throw or burn the belt.
Worn drum rollers or glides
Flat-spotted rollers make a rhythmic thump. Badly worn rollers or glides can make the drum drag until the motor cannot turn it.
Drive motor or motor switch
If the motor hums but will not start even with the belt off, the motor or its start switch has failed.
Door switch or belt switch
Many dryers will not run with the door switch faulty. Some also have a belt switch that stops the motor when the belt breaks.

FAQ
Dryer Not Tumbling — FAQ
How do I know if it's the belt?
Unplug the dryer, open the door and turn the drum by hand. If it spins very freely with no resistance, the belt is likely broken.
Should I replace the rollers and idler with the belt?
If they are worn, yes. We check them whenever we replace a belt, because a worn idler is often what broke the belt in the first place.
My dryer hums and smells hot — what should I do?
Stop using it and unplug it. A stalled motor overheats quickly. Call us to diagnose it.
