Common McClary faults

What goes wrong with McClary dryers

Older Camco design

Shares many parts with Moffat, Beaumark and GE models of the same era.

No heat

Element, thermal fuse and thermostats.

Won't tumble

Belt, idler or drum bearing wear.

A London, Ontario original

McClary was one of Canada's oldest appliance makers, based in London, Ontario. In the mid-1970s its parent merged with GE Canada's appliance business to form Camco, which kept the McClary name in use for years. McClary dryers still around today are generally Camco-era vented dryers, mostly electric, with dial timers and mechanical controls. They share much of their design with Moffat, Beaumark and Canadian GE dryers from the same factories.

Typical faults

A McClary that runs without heating usually has a failed heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat. A drum that will not turn often means a broken belt, a seized idler pulley or a worn drum bearing. Squealing and scraping come from worn drum glides or bearings. Older timers, start switches and door switches can also wear out after decades of use. With no error codes on these dryers, the fix depends on careful testing with a meter.

Parts and practical advice

Since McClary dryers came from Camco, many wear parts cross over to GE-family dryers of the same period, though discontinued timers and control parts can be hard to find. We check availability before any work. Have the model and serial number ready and send a photo of the label if you can. While the dryer is being serviced, it is a good time to replace old vinyl or foil duct with metal and clean lint from inside the cabinet.

FAQ

McClary dryer repair — FAQ

Do you repair McClary gas and electric dryers?

Yes. We repair McClary gas & electric dryers across Calgary and nearby towns.

Where is the model number on my McClary dryer?

Usually on a sticker inside the door opening or on the back panel. Have it ready when you call — it helps us bring the right parts.

Is my McClary dryer worth repairing?

In most cases, yes. Common failures like fuses, heating elements, belts, rollers and sensors cost far less than a new dryer. If yours is not worth fixing, the technician will tell you honestly.

Is McClary related to Moffat and GE?

Yes. After the 1970s merger that created Camco, McClary, Moffat, Beaumark and Canadian GE appliances were built in shared Canadian factories with many shared parts. That is why we can often repair an older McClary dryer using GE-family components today, even though the McClary name has not been used on new dryers for a long time.

My McClary dryer runs but the timer never advances. What causes that?

On many older timer-controlled dryers, the timer only advances while the heat is cycling, so a dryer that never finishes on an automatic setting may actually have a heating fault. A worn timer motor is another possibility. A technician can test both. Try a timed setting meanwhile, and watch the dryer while it runs.
