Bosch Dryer E01, E02 and E03 Codes: Lint Filter and Drain Hose Fixes

Most Bosch compact dryer codes are maintenance reminders, not broken parts. Here is what E01, E02, E03, E04, E16, DR and CrE mean and how to clear them safely.

Bosch compact dryers are a common sight in Calgary condos and townhouses. They are small, quiet, and often ventless, so they fit in a closet or under a counter where a full-size vented dryer never could. They also have a habit of stopping mid-program and flashing a short code such as E01, E02 or E03. The good news is that most of these are maintenance reminders rather than broken parts.

Below we explain why these dryers are so sensitive to lint and water, what each common code means, how to clear it safely, and which codes point to a repair rather than a cleaning job.

How a compact Bosch handles air and water

A vented dryer blows warm, damp air out of the house. A ventless Bosch keeps that air inside the machine and pulls the moisture out instead, so the same air circulates through the drum over and over.

Condenser and heat pump models

Condenser models cool the damp air in a heat exchanger so the water drops out. Heat pump models do the same job with a small refrigeration system, which uses less energy but runs at lower temperatures and takes longer. In both designs, the collected water goes either into a removable tank or down a drain hose.

Why filters matter so much

Because the air recirculates, any lint that gets past the filters ends up coating the condenser or heat pump. A thin film of lint, fabric softener residue or pet hair is enough to cut airflow, lengthen cycles and trigger a code. That is why Bosch builds the dryer to stop and ask for cleaning rather than carry on struggling.

Room conditions matter too. A heat pump model squeezed into a tight closet with the door shut, or installed in a cold, unheated space, works harder and takes longer, which makes lint and overload codes more likely.

E01 and E02: lint filter blocked

Bosch lists E01 and E02 as a blocked lint filter that needs cleaning. Most models have at least two filters: one in the door opening and, on heat pump models, a second filter in the base in front of the heat exchanger.

Cleaning the door filter

Pull the filter out, open it and remove the lint by hand. If the mesh looks dull or water beads on it, it has a film of softener residue. Rinse it under warm running water, let it dry fully, and put it back. A wet filter can trigger the code again.

Cleaning the base filter

On heat pump models, open the flap at the bottom front, release the filter housing as described in the manual, and rinse the foam and mesh parts. Check the seals as you put it back, because a filter that is not seated properly lets lint straight through to the heat pump.

When E02 is not about lint

E02 can also point to a control relay fault. If every filter is clean and dry and E02 keeps coming back, the problem is likely electronic, and further cleaning will not clear it.

E03: drain hose blocked or kinked

E03 means the condensate drain hose is blocked or kinked. It is common after the dryer has been pushed back into a closet or after a stacking kit was fitted, because the hose gets pinched behind the machine. A hose routed higher than the manual allows can cause the same result, as can a clog where the hose joins the household drain.

When you straighten the hose, follow it all the way to where it ends. In many condos it runs into a standpipe or a sink drain shared with the washer, and lint or detergent sludge there can back water up into the hose. Make sure the end is not pushed so far into the drain that it sits below the water line, and that it is clipped in place so it cannot slip out during a cycle and flood the floor.

If your model uses the tank rather than a drain hose, check that the tank is empty and slides fully home. Our post on condenser dryer water tank problems walks through tank, float and pump issues in more detail.

Other Bosch codes at a glance

Bosch uses a short list of codes on its compact dryers. Here is what the most common ones mean.

CodeMeaningWhat to do
E01 / E02Lint filter blockedClean and dry all filters
E03Drain hose blocked or kinkedStraighten or clear the hose
E04Dryer overloadedRemove some items, restart
E16Door opened during a cycleClose the door, restart
DRDoor not properly closedCheck the seal; call if it stays
CrECare program reminderRun the care program
E12Limescale in the heat pumpTechnician
E63Heating element failureTechnician

A few notes on these. Compact drums fill quickly, especially with towels or a duvet, so E04 is more common than people expect. DR that stays on with the door firmly shut can mean a faulty door switch. CrE is not a fault at all; it is a reminder to run the appliance care program that keeps the drying system clean. Bosch also lists a group of electronic faults, including E06, E08, E09, E24, E25, E28, E36 and E90, which point to the control electronics or wiring. The full list is on our Bosch dryer repair page, and other brands are in the dryer error code lookup.

Safe checks before you call

Unplug the dryer before you open any flap or move the machine. Then:

  1. Remove and clean every lint filter, including the base filter if your model has one. Let rinsed filters dry fully.
  2. Ease the dryer forward and check that the drain hose is not kinked, crushed or routed higher than the manual allows.
  3. Empty the condensate tank and make sure it slides fully back into place.
  4. Reduce the load size before the next attempt.
  5. Close the door firmly and check the seal for a trapped sleeve or sock.
  6. Plug the dryer back in, switch it on and run a short program to see whether the code returns.

Do not open the back panel or the heat pump system, which contains refrigerant, and never bypass the door switch. If your Bosch is stacked on a washer, take extra care moving it, or let us handle it as part of a stacked dryer repair.

Habits that keep the codes away

  • Clean the door filter after every load, and rinse it whenever it looks clogged with residue.
  • Check the base filter every few weeks and rinse it the way the manual describes.
  • Empty the tank after each cycle if you are not using a drain hose.
  • Leave space around the unit. Ventless dryers release warm air into the room and need it to circulate, which matters in a small closet.
  • Run the care program when CrE appears rather than dismissing it.
  • Expect longer cycles than a vented dryer. That is normal for this design, as we explain in our post on ventless heat pump dryers that aren't drying.

When to call a technician

If E01 or E02 keeps coming back with clean filters, E03 returns after you have freed the hose, or the display shows E12, E63 or one of the electronic fault codes, the dryer needs testing. Expect a flat diagnostic fee, a clear quote before any work begins and a 90-day parts and labour warranty on the finished repair.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clear an E01 or E02 code on a Bosch dryer?

Unplug the dryer, remove every lint filter, including the base filter on heat pump models, and clean them thoroughly. Rinse any filter that looks dull or clogged with residue and let it dry completely before refitting. Plug the dryer back in and run a short program. If E02 keeps returning with clean filters, it may be a control relay fault.

What does E03 mean on a Bosch dryer?

E03 means the condensate drain hose is blocked or kinked. It often appears after the dryer has been pushed back into a closet or fitted with a stacking kit, which pinches the hose. Ease the dryer forward, straighten the hose, check it is not routed higher than the manual allows, and clear any clog at the drain connection.

Why does my Bosch dryer show CrE?

CrE is not a fault. It is a reminder that it is time to run the appliance care program, which helps keep the drying system clean. Follow the steps in your owner's manual to run the program. Ignoring the reminder will not damage the dryer right away, but regular care helps prevent lint and residue codes later.

How often should I clean the filters on a Bosch heat pump dryer?

Clean the door lint filter after every load. Check the base filter in front of the heat exchanger every few weeks, or whenever the dryer asks, and rinse it as the manual describes. Households with pets or heavy towel loads may need to clean it more often. Always let rinsed filters dry fully before putting them back.

Why does my Bosch dryer take so long to dry?

Ventless condenser and heat pump dryers run at lower temperatures than vented dryers, so longer cycles are normal. Cycles that grow longer over time usually mean clogged filters, an overloaded drum or a dirty heat exchanger. Clean every filter, dry smaller loads and run the care program. If drying is still poor, a technician can check the heat pump and sensors.
