Dryer Burning Smell: Causes, What's Normal and When to Stop Using It

A burning smell from the dryer can be harmless dust on the heater or a warning sign of lint, a slipping belt or a failing motor. Here is how to tell the difference and when to stop using it.

A burning smell from the laundry room deserves attention every time. Sometimes it is harmless, like dust burning off a heater that has sat idle for a few weeks. Other times it is lint smouldering beside the heat source or a part overheating behind the panels. Dryers are a leading cause of house fires across Canada, so our advice is simple: when in doubt, stop the dryer, unplug it, and find the cause before you run another load.

This guide covers the warning signs that mean stop immediately, the most common sources of a burning smell, the smells that are normal and fade on their own, and what a technician checks when the smell keeps coming back.

Stop now if you notice any of these

  • Visible smoke from the dryer, the vent or the outside hood.
  • A strong electrical or melting plastic smell.
  • Scorch marks on the cabinet, cord, plug or outlet.
  • The outside of the dryer or the clothes feel much hotter than usual.
  • The smell gets stronger the longer the dryer runs.

Turn the dryer off, unplug it if you can reach the plug safely, and keep the door closed so you do not feed air to any smouldering lint. If there are flames or heavy smoke, get everyone out and call 911. If what you smell is gas, a rotten egg odour, do not touch any switches or unplug anything. Get out first, then phone ATCO Gas emergency at 1-800-511-3447 once you are outside. A smoke alarm near the laundry area, tested regularly, is the best early warning you can have.

Lint near the heater or burner

This is the most common cause of a genuine burning smell. Lint slips past the lint screen and collects inside the cabinet, around the heating element on electric dryers or near the burner on gas dryers. When it gets hot enough, it scorches. The smell is often compared to burnt toast or hot dust, and it may come and go from load to load.

Gas and electric dryers collect lint in slightly different places. On an electric model it tends to gather in the heater housing and along the back of the drum. On a gas model it settles around the burner tube and the floor of the cabinet, close to an open flame. Either way, the fix is the same: open the cabinet, vacuum it out, and clear the airflow problem that let it build up.

Lint inside the cabinet usually means airflow has been poor for a while. A clogged duct pushes lint back into the machine, and long winters in Calgary make it worse when frost narrows the outside hood. Cleaning inside the cabinet is a job for a technician, but the vent should be cleaned at the same time or the lint simply builds up again. Our posts on dryer fire safety and lint and how often to clean a dryer vent explain why this matters. Repeated overheating from the same cause is also what blows thermal fuses, as we cover in why a thermal fuse keeps blowing.

Belt, motor and electrical smells

Burning rubber

A hot rubber smell usually points to the drive belt. If the drum is hard to turn because of worn rollers, a seized idler pulley or an overloaded drum, the belt can slip on the motor pulley and heat up. A belt close to breaking can smell the same. If the drum then stops turning, see our post on a drum not turning and broken belts.

Hot metal or electrical smell

A sharp electrical smell can come from a motor that is overheating, often because its bearings are dragging or the blower is clogged with lint. It can also come from a failing wire connection inside the cabinet. These are serious. Stop using the dryer and have it checked before the next load.

Burnt plastic at the back

On electric dryers, the power cord connects to a terminal block behind a small cover at the back. A loose screw there causes arcing and heat, which can melt the block and give off a strong plastic smell. Discolouration on the plug or cord is a related warning sign. Leave the terminal block and the outlet to a technician or electrician.

Scorched fabric

If clothes come out smelling scorched or with brown marks, the dryer is likely running too hot. A cycling thermostat stuck closed or a badly restricted vent can push drum temperatures past what fabrics can handle. Samsung dryers may flag this with an HE code, which means the dryer is overheating or heating abnormally. Stop using high heat and have the temperature controls tested.

When the smell is normal

  • New dryer smell. A brand-new dryer can give off a light smell from coatings and oils on the heater for the first few loads. It should fade quickly.
  • First run in a while. Dust settles on the heater and burns off in the first few minutes, common after a summer of line drying.
  • Something in a pocket. Lip balm, a crayon or a tissue can melt or scorch on a hot cycle. Check the drum and the clothes.
  • Fabric softener sheets can smell sharp if one gets stuck near the lint screen.

If the smell is mild, fades within a few minutes and does not come back, it is usually nothing to worry about. If it returns load after load, it is not normal. A smell you only notice outside near the vent hood still counts; neighbours sometimes catch the scent of hot lint from a blocked hood before the homeowner does.

Safe checks before you call

Unplug the dryer before you touch it. On gas dryers, never open the burner area or adjust gas parts.

  1. Check the drum and pockets for melted items or stuck dryer sheets.
  2. Clean the lint screen and vacuum the slot it sits in with a narrow nozzle.
  3. Pull the dryer forward and check the hose for crushing or lint packed at the joints.
  4. Go outside while someone runs the dryer and confirm there is strong airflow at the vent hood.
  5. Look at the power cord and plug for discolouration or a soft, warped feel.
  6. With the dryer unplugged, turn the drum by hand. It should move smoothly without grinding or heavy drag.

Do not run the dryer again "just to see" if the smell was electrical, rubbery or strong. Each extra cycle can make the damage worse.

When to call a technician

Book service if the burning smell keeps returning, if you suspect lint inside the cabinet, or if the smell is electrical or rubbery. A technician opens the cabinet, removes lint from around the heater or burner, and checks the belt, rollers, motor, thermostats and wiring. Pairing that with our dryer vent cleaning stops the lint coming back. Fast Appliance Repair offers same-day gas dryer repair and electric dryer repair across Calgary, Okotoks, Strathmore and nearby towns. Call (587) 779-6919. You pay a flat diagnostic fee, approve a full quote before any work, and every repair includes a 90-day parts and labour warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a new dryer to smell like burning?

A light smell during the first few loads is normal. Coatings and oils on a new heating element burn off and the smell should fade quickly. If it is strong, smells electrical or plastic, or is still there after several loads, stop using the dryer and have it checked, since that points to a fault rather than new parts settling in.

Why does my dryer smell like burning rubber?

A burning rubber smell usually means the drive belt is slipping or wearing out. Worn drum rollers, a seized idler pulley or an overloaded drum make the drum hard to turn, and the belt heats as it slips on the motor pulley. Stop using the dryer, as a slipping belt often breaks soon after, and have the rollers and idler checked.

Can lint inside the dryer cause a fire?

Yes. Lint that escapes the lint screen can collect around the heating element or gas burner inside the cabinet, where it can scorch and ignite. Lint build-up is a leading cause of dryer fires. A clogged vent makes it worse by pushing lint back into the machine, so cabinet cleaning and vent cleaning should be done together.

What should I do if my dryer smells like it is burning?

Turn the dryer off and unplug it if you can reach the plug safely. Keep the door closed. If there is smoke or flame, get everyone out and call 911. If it smells like rotten eggs, leave the house and call ATCO Gas emergency at 1-800-511-3447 from outside. Do not run the dryer again until the cause is found.

Why does my dryer smell burnt after not using it for a while?

Dust settles on the heating element or burner when a dryer sits unused, and it burns off in the first few minutes of the next hot cycle. That smell is mild and fades quickly. If it keeps coming back on later loads, or smells like hot lint or plastic, the cause is something else and needs checking.
